Layout Sketches Research (TOC)

So firstly, I will show you the sketch of the TOC of the magazines we've been going over for the past few blogs.

Originally it looked like this....

My sketch came out a little something like this....

The text is organized by departments and a few images are included. This is the perfect mixture of writing and images. This is effective because the pictures attract the reader but the main focus which is the text, is not taken up by pictures only.

DISCLAIMER: A friend pointed out the fact that my graph paper was a square instead of a rectangle which is potentially how a magazine page is, so this one looks slightly different than the previous sketch.

My sketch of it...

This magazine is known for pictures and little amount of writing. Since it is a magazine for young girls, it has more images than text. It is also very colorful which again, ties to the idea that it is a magazine for a younger audience. The purpose is to keep the attention to the images. The text is separated by subtitles which makes it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for.

Sketch.

The Bark magazine is more formal than the previous ones. We can tell by the more neutral colors and only one picture included. This shows that the audience is more mature and older.

While doing my research, I often saw that pet magazines tend to divide their table of contents by departments. Diving it by departments makes it easier for people to find what they are intentionally looking for. Its organized and a simple way to help out the reader.

Something I kept noticing too, is that pet magazines usually give space in the TOC to the features, just like this:

In class we discussed, use the rule of thirds. Makes everything look neat, organized and appealing to the eyes.

Use white space too.

Repeating design elements.
